Empodium namaquensis is native to South Africa, and is found on rocky outcrops from Namaqualand to Clanwilliam. It grows to 30 cm and has tufted, broad pleated leaves and yellow lemon scented flowers.
An adorable yellow stargazing flower, often flowering in the absence of leaves -- which usually follow soon after flowering, during a winter, rainy season. Cold wet weather ideal. Seeds are quite large, black and glossy - requiring little care. Ordinary potting soil/seedling mix will do.
This has bright and vivid, starry yellow flowers with a very strong lemony scent which is evident from many metres away. The flowers are born on short stems in October and November, later than in the related plicatum and in less of a flush, making this a very valuable species. Lovely flowers but the scent is on a par with the best in the bulb world.
Native to a limited area of S. Africa. Cultivation is in a well drained, loam based soil, dry when dormant. Feeding is beneficial if you want lots of flowers and larger specimens of the naturally tiny corms.
