　　番红花又名藏红花、西红花、红蓝花，属鸢尾科多年生球茎花卉。过去，番红花曾称为"藏红花"，人们误以为是产在西藏，其实并非如此，而是原产西班牙等国，经印度转入西藏，再进入内地作药用，因其色红如红花（菊科植物）而误名其为"藏红花"。现在《中华人民共和国药典》将番红花药材名改称为"西红花"。
　　番红花既是百草园中的宠儿，又是庭园点缀或盆栽作为案头摆设的名卉。叶窄线形，无柄，浓绿色，光滑，全缘，表面有沟，背面带白色，叶缘反卷，先端尖，簇生在地下球茎上。花顶生，自叶丛中抽生。花色有淡紫色、白、黄、红、蓝色，花期有春季或秋季开花两种，春季花期为２～３月，秋季花期为１０月下旬～１１月中旬，而以春季开花者居多。因其株形极为矮小，性又耐寒，所以可作为冷天时的室内装点。
　　远在16世纪，欧洲诸国便有了食用番红花的习俗，番红花又称香红花、藏红花，原产欧洲南部，花的柱头呈细丝形，长约3厘米，顶部较宽，花柱呈紫红色或红棕色，略有光泽，质轻松软，有特异的香气，味微苦，为常用中药之一。番红花有活血通经、化淤止痛的功效。西班牙用番红花调理什锦饭，法国人用番红花来做火锅。日本人也早有食花之习俗，闻名于世的咖哩饭正是用番红花作色，以保证味色俱在。
      番红花又为著名的珍贵中药材，主要药用部分为小小的柱头，因此显得十分珍贵。花含胡萝卜素类化合物，其中主要为西红花甙、西红花酸二甲酯，西红花苦甙及挥发油，油中主要为西红花醛等。其干燥柱头味甘性平，能活血化瘀，散郁开结，止痛。用于治疗忧思郁结，胸膈痞闷，吐血，伤寒发狂，惊怖恍惚，妇女经闭，血滞月经不调，产后恶露不尽，瘀血作痛，麻疹，跌打损伤等。国外用作镇静、驱风剂。
　　下面介绍几个中医常用药方:
　　1. 治月经不调：番红花3克，黑豆150克，红糖90克。水煎服。
　　2. 产后瘀血：丹皮、当归各6克、大黄4.5克、番红花2克、干荷叶6克，共研末调服，1日3次，每次6克，开水送服。
　　3. 经闭、痛经：番红花2克、丹参15克、益母草30克、香附12克，水煎服。
　　4. 跌打损伤：番红花33克，煎汁，加白酒少许，外洗患处。
又，番红花  以花入药。性味甘、平，入心、肝经。有凉血化瘀、散郁开胃之功效。
    1、番红花0.6克，水一碗，浸一夜，煎服，治伤寒发狂、惊怖恍惚。
    2、番红花一朵，无灰酒一杯，将花入酒内，隔汤蒸出汁服饮，治吐血。
    3、番红花6克，川芎、赤芍、降香各15克，丹参30克，一日服，煎服或制冲剂、浸膏服，治冠心病、心绞痛。
    番红花性潮湿，气微香，还可煮粥、制茶、作糕点、浸酒等食用，但孕妇忌服。
